A 20-carat cushion-cut green beryl set in 950 platinum, flanked by two emerald-cut white diamonds. This is a one-of-a-kind atelier piece, built around a single center stone of unusual scale and clarity. The three-stone composition is one of the oldest in fine jewelry: a calm symmetry that holds the eye on the center while letting the diamond shoulders frame, not compete.

About the Stone

Green beryl is the variety that the market most often confuses with emerald. Both are green, both are beryl, but the trace element behind the color is different - and so is the character of the stone. Emerald is colored by chromium and sometimes vanadium, which gives it its characteristic deep, slightly bluish green and its tendency toward inclusions. Green beryl is colored by iron, the same element that turns aquamarine blue, and the result is a paler, cooler, more transparent green with far fewer inclusions.

The GIA draws the line by chromium and vanadium content: below a defined threshold, a green beryl-family stone is sold as green beryl rather than emerald, regardless of how saturated the color appears. Sources overlap with aquamarine - Brazil, Madagascar, Namibia, Mozambique, and Nigeria all produce gem-grade green beryl, often from the same pegmatite bodies.

At twenty carats, the practical reality is this: a clean transparent emerald of comparable size is functionally unobtainable, and what does appear on the market trades in the upper six and seven figures. A clean transparent green beryl at twenty carats offers the same scale and presence, with a different green - cooler, calmer, more lucid - at a fraction of the price. It is not a lesser emerald. It is its own stone, with its own logic.

The Setting

The setting is hand-finished in 950 platinum, the standard for high-jewelry mountings of important center stones. Platinum's density and ductility allow the prong work to be thinner and more secure than equivalent gold settings, which matters when the center stone weighs twenty carats. The center is held by double claw prongs on each corner, eight claws in total, distributing the load and protecting the stone's edges from contact wear.

The two emerald-cut diamond shoulders are matched for color and clarity and set in claw prongs of their own. The band is a flat platinum profile that sits comfortably against the finger, finished to a soft polish that contrasts with the brilliance of the diamonds and the depth of the green beryl.

How It Wears

Green beryl shares the same physical properties as the rest of the family: Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8, hexagonal crystal structure, refractive index between 1.57 and 1.60. The stone is comfortably set for everyday wear in a cocktail context, with two practical notes. First, like all 7.5 to 8 hardness gems, remove the ring before manual work or contact sports. Second, clean with lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft brush; ultrasonic cleaning is acceptable for this stone but we recommend the gentler method as the default.

Re-tipping of the platinum prongs every two to three years is the only routine maintenance required for daily-worn jewelry of this kind.

Commissioning a Variation

If you are drawn to this composition but would like a different stone - a Santa Maria aquamarine, a peach morganite, a Colombian emerald, or another colored stone of similar scale - the same setting can be commissioned around your selection.
